My Internal Monologue While Listening to Romeo Santos’ “Propuesta Indecente”

romeo santos formula 1

It’s an understatement to say I’m a big fan of Latin music and dance. I spend the large part of my free time dancing salsa, and sometimes I put my Spotify on private session because no one needs to know I listen to Marco Antonio Solis radio all day at work. So when Romeo came out with a new bachata single last summer, I was eager to listen to it, but ended up having a few thoughts about it.

Omg yes Romeo has a new single! It’s sure to be sexy as hell! Yeah!

*hits play*

Yup we are in ‘Los Infieles’ territory again. Hot story about a steamy affair. Can’t say I’m not into it.

“I don’t care about your man”, “te robo un besito“, etc etc. I mean it’s not really a Romeo song without that right.

La regla es que goces…oh it’s all about me huh, okay I see you Romeo, always putting the lady first.

Si te falto el respeto y luego culpo al alcohol

Wait what

Si levanto tu falda me darias el derecho

Wait no what??

Relajate, que este martini calmara tu timidez

WTF THIS IS DATE RAPE

ROMEO YOU MADE A SONG ABOUT DATE RAPE

THIS IS NO LONGER UNA PROPUESTA INDECENTE IT IS LEGIT UNA PROPUESTA ILEGAL

[NOTE: Try as I might to hate this song for its questionable ethics and arguably being on the wrong side of the rape culture debate, it’s admittedly still on my running playlist and I won’t pretend I don’t get down to it in the club…#bachateraproblems]

  1. I have been listening to this song for a while, but I thought that I was not hearing the lyrics correctly. Color me wrong! I heard them perfectly fine, and I am so upset now. So far, you are the only one that has summed up my thoughts and feelings. I loved this song. I am actually really hurt and upset because I can’t listen to it anymore. How many girls and boys are being influenced by this? “Well, if I just give her a few more drinks then I can get it.” Or, “well, I had too much to drink and my skirt was too short, so I deserved to be violated.” Aaaaahhh

    • Hey Dani,
Somehow your comment slipped through the cracks and I am just seeing it now! But yes…I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who was disturbed by the lyrics of this song. But it’s incredibly terrifying to know that these types of messages are the ones that are being promoted in smash hits that are popular all over the world…and even more terrifying to think how many minds (male and female) are being molded to think that this is okay.

  2. My thoughts exactly. I always loved dancing to this song and then sat down to figure out the lyrics and was very troubled by them – especially that line “Si te falto el respeto y luego culpo al alcohol”. I found your blog post by googling “propuesta indecente date rape”. UGH.
